The Archi-Confluence project is a “boat workshop architecture” which reuses initial barge structure .
Goal was to work on shipbuilding because it is a discipline where each module is designed, machined and assembled, enabling a rapid final design. We wanted to highlight this intelligent architecture.
How to compare all of european institution through those boat and to send students on fields, running in a lot of cities and learning new cultures? With a boat.
Thus program is divides on two additional Freyssinet barges. Template chosen is 5.05 x38, 50×4, 90m. Fifty students can embark on each barge to travel the network of French and European waterways. The principle is to propose to students a topic of workshop, to deal with during the the trip before exposing it on arriving at destination.
To ‘close’ classrooms, doors slide from the horizontal to vertical. This frees up space or compartmentalized depending of use. Thus the reading area / library is fixed and can grow when classrooms are unoccupied. This is the same system for meeting room: the two administration offices may congregate just to create one.
Amphitheater space can be a conference room or an exhibition space through modular practicable. Seats are slid inside wooden box, which deploy from the floor.
The control cabin, on a similar principle than feasible deploys to give the commander the necessary vision to navigate and pass under all bridges.
We wanted to maximize the barge shape , for example, reuse rounding of the forward hull to create a quiet and intimate space, for work and reading as the library space. This space has become kitchen / kitchenette on the other boat. Similarly for the model workshop next to the engine. , .
The mechanical motor space is on the back of the workshop model. These multiple functions spaces are also true for the workshops. At night he becomes a place off. The hammock are present in each locker they can fix to the ceiling.
It is also the idea of the whole course of the two we wanted exploit. Being outside and inside. More intimate spaces are scattered on both sets to create common places of exchange, sheltered or not depending on the condition . A wharf or navigation, they join to become one unit, a set. It may instead resume their autonomy along the river. Students can go on the roofs and observing or studying in the field.

It is also the question of the brightness of the inner steel mass that we wanted to deal with The facade is a steel structure that creates a checkerboard geometry, which perforated removable panels are fixed. The Labs roof is pierced to illuminate work areas and bring natural light inside.
For the lower level workshops, library and classrooms, have skylights that bring natural light and illuminates workspace directly.

We wanted to work the material of steel, raw material and ultra resistant: to show it in some of its aspects, as it can be both structural, facade, and ornamentation, treated very rough, massive, or used as large thin plate, to work. Or may be almost invisible, in the form of cables continues, it is a contrasting material, evolving over time, and soaking up its environment by its oxidation.
